Virtually Speaking

18 months into the pandemic, how do you feel about virtual presentations now?

I’m a firm believer that we all became broadcasters during the pandemic. How we show up on-camera is vital for our impact and connection.

This week, I had the chance to collaborate with the dynamite team at @md_financial_management. We talked all about building trust and meaningful human connection in a hybrid reality.

Here are some key ideas to help elevate your next virtual presentation:

1️⃣ Engage Them Early
Ever ask yourself - “I wonder if my content is good enough for this group?” Take the time to meet members of your audience well before the event itself. Get to know them and not just the event organizer. Understand what they need and what needs to be celebrated. Include what they share in your presentation. This makes them the star and gives you confidence in the value you can deliver.

2️⃣ Share the Spotlight
Look at how you can include other voices. You’d never see a 6 o’clock news anchor present solo for the entire 60 minutes. There is variety with co-anchors, throws to reporters and interview segments. To connect with your virtual audience, include your moderator, have a dialogue, engage the audience with questions every 10-15 minutes.

3️⃣ Always be Storytelling
Once you’ve done your first pass of big ideas and key messages, ask yourself, what do you want your audience to think, feel and do? If you want your audience to feel connected to you and your message, choose the best stories that relate to your big ideas and share the emotion behind them.

What have you seen or heard that works well during virtual presentations? Share your best tips in the comments below.
